Advantages of Older Workers Over the Junior Colleagues
Education is the greatest resource known to man; as it creates a platform for learning and instruction. Through education, we are able to learn useful skills through which we can utilize in a productive way and earn an income while at it. Although education is good, in the workplace it can still not be substituted for experience. It is just like a young driver who went to a driving school and has learned all the rudiments of driving from his instructors if pitched against a driver with 10 years experience in driving competition, which does you think will perform better? Obviously, the more experienced driver will perform better than the new driver! This scenario applies to the workplace as well. Consider the following reasons why older workers are better than younger counterparts in the workplace;
- Experience: Many things can be taught within the four walls of a classroom but the experience cannot be taught through a book, it can only be experienced. The longevity of older workers at the office means they would have mastered the rudiments of working at that establishment and are thus more reliable than staffs little or no experience. At times, theoretical knowledge may be exaggerated and not completely applicable in the form it is taught in the classroom. Experience is what will give the knowledge of what to do to get the best results.
- Work Ethic: By virtue of working at an establishment for an extended period of time, they would have had ample time to acclimatize with the operations of that organization and would know more about what it takes to keep the organization active and viable. They are also more loyal to the organization more than newer staffs who might still be attracted to other establishments.
- Punctuality: Working at a place for so long means that you would have developed a sense of familiarity and dedication to duty because working there would have become a part and parcel of your daily life. This is why punctuality tends to be higher among older staff than younger ones. They are also likely to arrive at work and be willing to get straight to work.
- Good communication skill: Older workers are better communicators. They tend to be good listeners and could also be more attentive than junior workers. Patience is also a trait that is more likely to be found among older workers. While the younger ones may be impatient due to their overconfidence in their skill set, the older ones tend to be more careful, paying more attention to detail and getting a better overall result.
- Organization: For any organization to achieve maximal results, proper organization is a must. Regardless of the resources at the disposal of any establishment, if there is a lack of organization among the staff then such establishment will likely function below capacity. Older workers in most situations would be more organized than the younger ones. This is because experience naturally bestows on them the capacity to get things done in a precise and orderly manner.
